How it works It is made up of three main parts: the Optium Sensor, Optium Plus blood glucose electrodes, and Optium blood ß-Ketone electrodes. ß-Ketone is a name we use for our blood ketone test which detects ß-Hydroxybutyrate, the major ketone body.
When the blood sample is applied to the electrode, the glucose or ketone (ß-Hydroxybutyrate) in the blood, depending on which test you are performing, reacts with the chemicals on the electrode. This reaction produces a small electrical current that is measured and the result is displayed by the sensor. Alternative site testing MediSense Optium Xceed is designed for testing blood obtained from a finger prick, but you can also use it to test blood from other, less painful, sites such as the base of the thumb, forearm or upper arm. The instructions say that you should ask for personal health advice from your diabetes specialist doctor or nurse, before trying alternative site testing.
